Dr E Matema

Lecturer

Faculty of Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources

Dr Matema's academic journey reflects a sustained commitment to agricultural science, sustainable production systems, and higher education. She holds a PhD in Sustainable Agriculture from the University of the Free State, South Africa, awarded in 2026. She previously obtained a Master’s degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the same university in 2014, strengthening her expertise in sustainable farming systems and the scientific principles underpinning agricultural productivity and environmental stewardship. Her professional preparation also includes a Postgraduate Diploma in Tertiary Education from Bindura University of Science Education, Zimbabwe, completed in 2023. Earlier in her career, she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from the Women’s University in Africa in 2008 and a National Diploma in Agriculture from Rio Tinto College of Agriculture, Zimbabwe, in 2000. Her additional professional qualifications include an Executive Certificate in Community Development and Humanitarian Project Management from the University of Zimbabwe and a Certificate of Achievement associated with the Women’s Education Worldwide Student Leadership Conference at Mount Holyoke College and Smith College in the United States of America. This multidisciplinary educational background enables her to connect agricultural science with entrepreneurship, community development, institutional leadership, and practical approaches to sustainable livelihoods. This qualification complements her agricultural expertise with formal training in higher education and supports her work in curriculum delivery, student supervision, academic assessment, professional mentorship and developed a Bachelor of Science Honours in Agricultural Engineering which was conditionally approved by ZIMCHE. Dr Matema contributes to scholarly research through journal publications, book chapters, conference papers, and collaborative research projects. Her work addresses agricultural sustainability, climate adaptation, biological approaches to crop management, indigenous knowledge systems, rural development, and technological innovation. Her participation in professional forums on climate change, gender, sustainable food systems, small grains production, and traditional grains further demonstrates her interest in connecting agricultural sustainability with broader questions of social inclusion and community development. She views inclusive agricultural development as an important pathway towards improving livelihoods, strengthening rural economies, and building the capacity of communities to respond to changing environmental and economic conditions. Her professional approach reflects the principles of Education 5.0, emphasising the application of knowledge through teaching, research, community engagement, innovation, and industrialisation. She is particularly interested in developing agricultural technologies and sustainable production systems that respond to local needs while creating opportunities for women, young people, smallholder farmers, and rural communities. By engaging students in research and innovation activities, she contributes to the development of graduates equipped to participate in agricultural enterprise development, applied research, and sustainable rural transformation. On recognition, she received the Dr Ndoro's Shield for the Most Empowered Woman in Africa in 2008; an award recorded in her professional biography and associated with the Women’s University in Africa. This recognition forms part of her professional journey and complements her continuing interest in women's empowerment, leadership development, education, and community advancement.
