The Women’s University in Africa (WUA), embodying the tagline “Addressing gender disparity and fostering equity in University Education,” seeks to integrate academic excellence with sustainability. Marketing students, together with their Coordinator and Marketing Communications Lecturer, Mr. Terera and Mrs. Makuliyashi, initiated the “Our Power, Our Planet” sustainability campaign to apply academic knowledge.

On Earth Day, April 22, the student-led initiative emphasised environmental sustainability. Its objectives were to educate stakeholders via intellectual discourse and to enhance environmental cleanliness. The topic, “Our Power, Our Planet,” emphasised the connection between environmental sustainability and human welfare, as well as the university’s commitment to advancing fairness and quality of life. The event was covered by both digital and offline media from the university and the media community that include 3KTV. Panel discussions enabled participants and experts to engage in detailed debates on sustainable practices.

The event included a “Hug a Tree” initiative aimed at fostering environmental consciousness. A networking luncheon convened students and industry professionals, facilitating ties and collaboration. Prominent stakeholders commended the event as a paradigm of institutional sustainability and the efficacy of student-driven transformation. This event assists students in comprehending sustainability while they ready themselves for the industry.

The “Our Power, Our Planet” campaign successfully raised awareness and facilitated cleanup efforts, while strengthening WUA’s rapport with stakeholders and exemplifying WUA’s mandate. The initiative established the institution as a leader in sustainability education and community participation by integrating academic and practical expertise.

The three pillars of sustainability:Environment, Social, and Economic—work together to create a balanced and sustainable future. Environmental sustainability focuses on protecting natural resources and reducing environmental impact, social sustainability promotes equity, well-being, and inclusive communities, while economic sustainability supports responsible growth, innovation, and long-term financial resilience. Together, these pillars ensure that present needs are met without compromising the ability of future generations to thrive..
