OVERVIEW
The Department of Family and Health Sciences has developed an intensive short cause for those who are interested in learning how to care for people in emergency situations before these patients are transported to medical health facilities for professional assistance. Many workplaces encounter various types of emergencies that require intervention and staff needs to be prepared for such eventualities. When the police are called to scenes of accidents and other calamities, they should be able to assist the injured and those in shock, and in distress. In instances where the officers lack proper training, they may fail to save lives whist waiting for professional assistance to arrive.
This course therefore seeks to bridge the gap in care by training a wide range of cadres who are in positions of authority or responsibility and are expected to act whenever there is an emergency in their work settings or home environments. The course will train participants in a series of targeted interventions that equip different members of the public to respond to the health emergencies that they are likely to encounter in their everyday lives and within communities.
This course is for those who are involved in work that requires them to provide emergency health care or first aid in their workplaces. The main target for this course are: the health assistants (nurse aids), uniformed forces, security sector, teachers, community volunteers, private sector enterprises (commercial and industrial), Other potential trainee participants may apply from the mining, agriculture, transport, hospitality and security services sectors. While this comprehensive training is essential for preparing individuals to respond to emergencies, it also enhances knowledge for use within homes, communities and public locations. Many work settings have units or departments that attend to the health and well-being of their employees and the staff deployed in these units are suitable cadres for this course.
By the end of the course, the trainee will be equipped with practical skills to provide basic emergency care in his/her own work settings and in localities where they reside. The course will cover the following topics:
- Roles, Rights and Responsibilities of a Carer in an Emergency situation;
- Life Threatening Emergency Health Conditions;
- Patient Centred Approach;
- Patient Assessment and Triage;
- Infection Prevention, Control and Hygiene;
- Privacy and Confidentiality in a Medical Environment;
- Patient Mobility, Patient lifting and Transporting;
- Medical Care Terminology;
- Palliative Care Emergencies;
- Caring for Respiratory and Cardiac Arrest
- Trauma and Shock;
- Communicable diseases;
- First Aid;
- Basic life support;
- Emergencies Care for Infants and Children; and
- Practical Sessions.
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
- Five Ordinary Level passes including English Language,
- An “A” level pass will be an added advantage.
Duration of Course
The course will be offered over a period of 8 weeks on a full-time basis at a fee of USD160.
Certification
On successful completion of the Health Care Assistant course, students will be awarded certificates.
