Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following position that has arisen at the Women’s University in Africa.

 SYSTEMS DEVELOPER

Reporting to the ICT Administrator (Information Systems), the Systems Developer is responsible for developing, integrating, maintaining, and enhancing University information systems. The role supports the automation of academic and administrative processes, system integration, data integrity, and continuous improvement of digital services to enhance institutional efficiency and user experience.

Duties Responsibilities

  • Systems Development
    • Develop, customize, and maintain in-house web, mobile, and enterprise applications using approved frameworks and industry standards.
    • Install and commission new applications, ensuring they are configured to meet operational requirements.
    • Engage relevant stakeholders to assist with feasibility assessments and gather precise user requirements for new projects.
    • Amend designs and software to reflect changes in operational systems and evolving business needs.
    • Analyse system errors and performance bottlenecks; implement corrective measures and recommend security patches as required.
    • Design and implement data and application architecture for in-house systems, ensuring scalability and security.
    • Develop work schedules and road-maps based on weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly sectional plans.
    • Develop and maintain detailed systems documentation for all in-house applications and integrations.
  • Database & Server Administration
    • Assist in the design, implementation, and migration of databases.
    • Manage database backup, restore, and routine performance monitoring.
    • Configure data access, user rights, and auditing protocols to protect sensitive business information.
    • Deploy and maintain application servers.
    • Implement server monitoring and control systems to ensure high availability.
  • Service Management & User Support
    • Develop and update user manuals, technical work instructions, and standard operating procedures.
    • Work closely with other ICT personnel to ensure seamless integration of systems.
    • Provide user training and first-line support to university staff and stakeholders.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology or any related field from a recognised institution of higher learning.
  • Relevant professional qualifications are an added advantage.
  • At least one (1) year post-qualification experience in a software development environment.
  • Proven experience in:
    • Systems design and implementation (including Databases, ERPs, Web applications, and Mobile Apps).
    • University Information Systems implementation/support.
    • e-Learning implementation/support.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Programming Languages & Frameworks: Java, Jakarta EE, Spring Boot, PHP, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML5 and CSS3.
  • Web & Application Development: Web application development, responsive design, client-server architecture, MVC principles and modern web application frameworks.
  • IDEs & Development Tools: IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, NetBeans, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code and Git/version control.
  • Databases: MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server; SQL, database design, optimisation, backup, recovery and performance monitoring.
  • Servers, Infrastructure & Virtualisation: Linux administration, Windows Server/Desktop, NGINX, IIS, Apache HTTP Server, Apache Tomcat, VMware virtualisation, virtual machine deployment and management.
  • Mobile Development: Android Studio/Kotlin, Xcode/Swift and/or cross-platform mobile development frameworks such as Flutter or React Native.
  • APIs & Systems Integration: RESTful APIs, JSON/XML, OpenAPI/Swagger, web services, authentication/authorisation and third-party/enterprise systems integration.
  • Security: Application security, access control, secure coding practices, vulnerability identification, security patching and audit logging.
