Preamble

The Diploma in Emergency Medical Care is designed to equip students with the knowledge, practical skills and professional competencies required to provide safe, timely and effective emergency medical care. The programme focuses on the assessment, stabilisation, treatment and transportation of patients experiencing acute illness, injury or other medical emergencies. Students are exposed to emergency medical procedures, patient care, trauma management, disaster response, basic pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, and ethical and professional practice. The programme combines theoretical learning with practical training to prepare graduates for effective service delivery in pre-hospital and emergency healthcare settings.

Programme Aim

The aim of the programme is to develop competent and compassionate emergency medical care practitioners who can assess, manage, stabilise and safely transport patients during medical emergencies and traumatic situations, while working effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Programme Objectives

Upon completion of the programme, students should be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and common medical emergencies.
• Conduct systematic patient assessments and identify life-threatening conditions.
• Provide appropriate emergency first aid and pre-hospital medical interventions.
• Manage trauma, burns, fractures, bleeding, shock and other emergency conditions.
• Perform basic and advanced life-support procedures appropriate to their level of training.
• Safely prepare, handle and transport patients requiring emergency medical care.
• Demonstrate effective communication with patients, relatives, communities and healthcare professionals.
• Apply principles of infection prevention, patient safety and professional ethics.
• Respond effectively to mass-casualty incidents, disasters and other emergency situations.
• Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, compassion and respect for patient dignity.

Admission Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally meet the following requirements:

A minimum of five (5) Ordinary Level passes, including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject, or equivalent qualifications.
Applicants should demonstrate an interest in emergency healthcare and patient care.
Relevant health-related certificates or qualifications may be considered for admission in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
Mature-entry applicants with relevant work experience may be considered subject to the institution’s approved admission policy.
All applicants must satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the relevant regulatory or professional authorities.
