Preamble
The Bachelor of Science Honours in Clinical Midwifery is designed to prepare highly competent, compassionate, ethical, and evidence-based midwifery professionals who can provide comprehensive care to women, newborns, and families throughout pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and the early neonatal period.
The programme combines theoretical knowledge, clinical practice, research, leadership, and community-based learning to equip students with the competencies required to provide safe and quality midwifery care. Particular emphasis is placed on antenatal care, normal and complicated pregnancy, labour and delivery, postnatal care, newborn care, reproductive health, maternal and neonatal emergencies, health promotion, disease prevention, and respectful maternity care.
The programme responds to the need for skilled midwives who can contribute to reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality and improving reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health outcomes. Students are exposed to evidence-based clinical practice, professional ethics, communication, leadership, public health principles, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Aim of the Programme
The aim of the Bachelor of Science Honours in Clinical Midwifery is to produce competent, compassionate, ethical, and professionally accountable midwives who are able to provide safe, evidence-based, woman-centred and family-centred care across the continuum of pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and newborn care.
Objectives of the Programme
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of clinical midwifery.
- Provide safe, respectful, woman-centred and culturally sensitive midwifery care.
- Conduct comprehensive antenatal assessments and provide appropriate care throughout pregnancy.
- Competently manage normal pregnancy, labour, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
- Identify, manage, and appropriately refer women experiencing pregnancy, labour, and postpartum complications.
- Demonstrate competence in the recognition and management of maternal and neonatal emergencies.
- Participate in health education and community interventions aimed at promoting maternal, reproductive, and newborn health.
- Demonstrate commitment to continuous professional development and lifelong learning.
- Contribute to the improvement of maternal and neonatal health through advocacy, research, leadership, and quality clinical practice.
- A recognised secondary school qualification with the required passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, Mathematics, and a science subject, subject to the institution’s approved entry requirements.
- A recognised nursing qualification and appropriate professional registration/licensure where admission is intended for qualified nurses undertaking a clinical midwifery degree.
- Relevant nursing and/or midwifery experience where required by the institution or applicable professional regulatory authority.
- Applicants holding other relevant health qualifications may be considered in accordance with approved institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Provide evidence of valid professional registration where applicable.
- Undertake supervised clinical placements in approved healthcare facilities.
- Meet all clinical practice, health, immunisation, occupational safety, and professional conduct requirements applicable to clinical training.
- Participate in skills laboratory sessions, simulations, clinical assessments, community-based activities, and research.
