Driving Digital Futures: WUA at ATU ICT Day 2025

On 10 December 2025, students and staff from Women’s University in Africa (WUA) attended the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) ICT Day commemoration hosted by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) at Golden Conifer Harare. The event focused on Africa’s digital transformation journey and sustainable development, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, students, and innovators. This year’s celebration was themed: ”Digital Pathways to a Greener, Climate Resilient Africa

WUA students made insightful contributions highlighting that artificial intelligence and digital tools are advancing faster than academic syllabi and institutional policies, and urged for more agile, student‑informed updates to keep education relevant. They critiqued the trend of “recycled innovations”, noting that high unemployment often pushes graduates toward financially driven, copy‑cat ideas instead of solution‑focused innovations that address real social challenges. They also raised a critical concern about online violence and digital safety, asking how the Cyber and Data Protection Act can protect citizens, especially women and activists, from abuse while still upholding freedom of expression in digital spaces.

The ATU ICT Day commemoration highlights Africa’s commitment to sustainable digital transformation and the critical role of youth innovation. WUA’s representation at this event was a significant step toward fostering academic-industry collaboration and empowering students to contribute to Africa’s ICT future.
