    Preamble

    The Diploma in Environmental Management is a comprehensive program meticulously designed to equip students with the requisite knowledge and skills essential for proficiently managing and addressing environmental concerns across diverse industries. It covers areas of environmental law, pollution control, occupational health and safety and waste management. This course offers a holistic approach to environmental stewardship. Throughout the program, students cultivate a profound understanding of environmental management principles and practices, and the ability to apply them in a variety of sectors. The programme equips students to pursue careers in environmental management or those seeking to sharpen their existing expertise in the field. The curriculum is designed to impart practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

    Programme Aim

    This program will focus on providing practical guidance, tools, innovative approaches and resources, including effective approaches, as well as best practices for managing the environment. The programme also helps to develop and promote information and data exchange among legal stakeholders; promote public participation, access to information and access to justice in environmental matters. It will also promote the recognition of the relationship between environmental management and society. It aims to encourage and facilitate education on environmental management and sustainable natural resource utilization as well as environmental awareness-raising initiatives at different levels. The programme seeks to find solutions to emerging environmental issues and the relationship between environmental management and sustainable development

    Objectives

    The Diploma in Environmental Management will equip graduates for a range of careers in the agricultural sector and technical fields of Environmental including enterprise managers, Environmental services, merchandising, research support staff and local government.

    After completion of this Diploma in Environmental Management, the learner will be able to:

    • Develop an understanding of the various environmental issues and their concepts.
    • Strengthen the effective implementation of environmental management laws.
    • Create awareness about legal issues associated with global environmental concerns
    • Support capacity building for increased effectiveness of environmental management for all stakeholders at all levels.
    • Support national governments in developing and implementing environmental strategies and strengthen environmental governance;
    • The programme will help the society in minimizing environmental risks by providing the scientific knowledge to students and professionals.
    Admission Entry Requirements

    For admission into the Diploma in Environmental Management programme, one should have the following qualifications:

    • A minimum of five “O” level passes, including English Language, Mathematics and any Science subject.
    • A National Certificate in Environmental Management, Agriculture, Natural Resources Management or any other relevant qualification from a recognized institution as approved by WUA.
    • Candidates who attempted “O” Level Mathematics and obtained at least an “E” grade shall be required to pass a Mathematics Foundation course that is offered by the University.
    • Candidates shall be required to pass Mathematics at “O” Level before they may graduate.
    Duration Of Programme
    • The Diploma in Environmental Management shall extend over a period of two years and offered based on conventional, block release, evenings and/or weekend classes.
    • The programme for the taught courses shall be arranged in four semesters and may commence in any semester as approved by WUA.
    • Independent research shall run concurrently with the taught courses.
    Assessment Of Students
    • There shall be a set offormal examinations at the end of each semester.
    • Coursework shall account for 40% while the formal examination shall account for 60% of the overall assessment.
    • Courses for each semester shall be assessed through a 3-hour written examination and continuous assessments.
    • The examiners may, at their discretion, require candidates to present themselves for an oral examination.

    Additional Information
    • The Research Project shall be based on an assessment of the student based on a series of practical Environmental related activities done during the second year of               the programme at an approved site after registration and approval of the proposal.
      • The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences shall approve at least one academic member of staff to supervise the student’s dissertation.
      • There shall be a minimum 40 hours consultation time between the student and the supervisor during the period of the research project.
      • The student must submit two spiral bound copies of the Research project to the Faculty for marking at a date determined by the Faculty.
      • The assessment of the Research Project shall be based on the format prescribed by the Faculty Board.
      • The written dissertation shall account for 80% and presentations shall constitute 20% of the final mark of the Research Project.
      • The Research Project shall be assessed by two examiners.
      • The Faculty Board of Examiners shall consider the two examiners’ assessments and decide on the final mark for the Research Project.
