The Women’s University in Africa (WUA) is a private institution that was established in 2002 and granted a Charter by the Government of Zimbabwe in 2004 (Statutory Instrument 130/2004). Its mandate is to address gender disparity and foster equity in university education.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill in the position of Dean of Students which has arisen at the Women’s University in Africa Harare campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ JOB DESCRIPTION/KEY TASKS

 

  • Providing of leadership in developing policies, programmes and services which enable students to cope effectively with the factors of personal, social and intellectual development that affect academic performance;
  • Effective and efficient utilisation of University facilities as learning, recreational and income generating centres and facilitating provision of high quality catering services;
  • Facilitating the provision of high quality health care and health education to students and staff;
  • Providing appropriate and user-friendly facilities and equipment for students with disabilities;
  • Providing adequate, functional and state-of-the-art sporting and recreational facilities and services;
  • Ministering to the needs of the University community and the society at large through the provision of spiritual guidance, counselling, moral and material support in an ecumenical spirit;
  • Acting as a point of contact for students who want to talk about issues of harassment, discrimination and sexual misconduct;
  • Production of campus publications specific to student needs and services (such as the Student Planner);
  • Developing policies, programmes and services that keep students gainfully occupied after lectures and enabling them to cope effectively with University life,
  • Ensuring provision of Career and Advisory Services for students (Establishing the Career and Advisory Centre will be a targeted goal);
  • Facilitating technological change and other systems to realise the potential of open distance and e-learning pedagogies;
  • Facilitating the effective engagement of students in the university and the governance of the University in line with the University Charter, by:
  • Positioning Student Affairs appropriately within the University;
  • Assisting with the SRC election processes;
  • Managing the recognition of student organisations and structures; and
  • Applying required resources to effect the mandate; and
  • Developing sustainable student governance interventions for the SRC by organising workshops, training programmes and seminars on governance and leadership.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES

Qualifications

  • PhD (Doctorate in Social Sciences or Education);
  • Master’s degree in Social Sciences or Education degree in the same field is an added advantage;
  • A relevant degree in Educational Psychology, Social Work or comparable discipline with human management aspect; and
  • Counseling qualification is a prerequisite.

Experience

  • 5 years relevant working experience in a leadership role preferably in a higher education environment is an added advantage.
