The Brains Behind A Success Story


It has been a decade of hard work, sacrifice and resilience for the founders of the first English speaking University in Africa. It would be meaningless to talk of the success story without taking a breather to look at the two women who worked hard to establish a university which has stood the test of time to become a force to reckon with in Zimbabwe and beyond. In a brief exposé, below are the profiles of the selfless women, whose one dream is to see the African women empowered.

Chairperson Board of Trustees
Dr Fay King Chung is a co-founder and Chairperson Board of Trustees of the Women’s University in Africa. The former cabinet minister is a renowned educationist and administrator whose career has been almost exclusively in the education sector. She started off her career as a secondary school teacher and rose through the ranks to occupy several offices in the Ministry of Education. Dr Chung is a former Minister of Education. She has been involved in a number of non governmental organizations and she took part in the formation of the Zimbabwe Foundation for Education with Production. She has sat on several boards which include the Forum for Women’s Educationalists (FAWE), Zimbabwe National Education Advisory Board and member to the Delors Commission on Education. Dr Chung is also a founder member of the Association for strengthening Higher Education for women in Africa (ASHEWA).She has several publications to her name which include “Reliving the Second Chimurenga”.

Profile of the Vice Chancellor
Professor Hope Sadza is the founder of Women’s University in Africa and its current Vice Chancellor. A former Public Service Commissioner and Parastatals Services Commissioner Professor Sadza is a member of various professional organisations which include the Institute of Personnel Management in Zimbabwe, University of Venda Council, the Zimbabwe Institute of Management and is a Councilor of the Institute of Directors Zimbabwe. She also sits on the company boards for Barclays Bank, Delta Cooperation and Securico Security Services amongst others. A renowned administrator and academic, Professor Sadza has won several awards in Nigeria, Washington DC, and Zimbabwe. These include runner up in the 2006 Director of the year (Public Service and National Contribution Award Category). In 2009 she won the most prestigious Fulbright Scholarship tenable in the United States of America being one of the three recipients in Africa. All these were awarded for her work in co-founding the Women’s University in Africa and sustaining it from 2002 to date.
Mrs. Gono Appointed To IAU Reference Group
The Registrar and SBD Director, Mrs Semukeliso Gono has been appointed to a 20 Member International Association of Universities (IAU) Reference group on higher education.
The IAU launched a new four year project on higher education for EFA (Education for all) in September 2011. The reference group serves as an advisory group to develop, implement and communicate IAU activities on this subject.
The Reference Group is set up to cover the duration of the IAU Project from January 2012 to July 2015. The responsibilities of the Reference Group are to advise on and contribute to the development of the activities defined within the IAU project, assist in communicating products and results and share expertise, technical materials and work in a collaborative manner.
We would like to congratulate Mrs Gono on   her appointment to this prestigious Reference Group.
WUA To Enroll March Intake
At its strategic Planning workshop held in Nyanga last year, the University took up ‘Growth with Quality’ as its theme for the period 2012 to 2015.It is against this background and a vision to see the University with a student population of  4500 by 2015 that the University has set out to enrol students twice a year.
The University will this March enrol its first crop of students to study in the fields of Agriculture, Social Science and development studies and Management and Entrepreneurial Development. The Admissions Department confirmed that to date the office has received overwhelming responses from prospective students who want to enrol with the University.
In a statement the Deputy Registrar Mrs Chieza highlighted that the move to enrol in March will help the University meet the increasing demand for its programme. She further pointed that preparations are underway to accommodate these students come March 2012.
