Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant position of Assistant Librarian - Reader Services which has arisen at Women’s University in Africa.
Responsibilities
- Primarily responsible for reader services area within the library; including circulation, interlibrary loan, and reserve desk operations;
- As part of the Library Management team, plays an active role in fulfilling the Library’s Action Plan, helping to develop policies, and suggesting service improvements;
- Assisting in preparing the annual budget;
- Reviewing potential materials for acquisition and contributes to acquisition and collection development efforts;
- Billing library patrons for lost or non-returned materials;
- Assisting Librarian with circulation and technical policies and procedures;
- Providing reference service;
- Providing Information Literacy Skills Training of library patrons;
- Responsible for reprographic services;
- Promoting newly acquired books through displays, book lists and bookmarks, and post social media and website updates;
- Overseeing library event planning, outreach, and specialised services, coordinate meetings, facilitate discussions and provide discussion guides and library awareness;
- Publicizing and Promoting of the library which may involve, liaising with media to promote library services, and writing up social media and website updates;
- Leading grant-writing process, seeking out potential grants from external sources, then put together the necessary paperwork;
- Planning and participate in fundraising drives;
- Analyzing patrons' requests to determine needed information, and assist in furnishing or locating that information.
- Responding to customer complaints, taking action as necessary
- Arranging for interlibrary loans of materials not available in the library
- Compiling lists of overdue materials, and notify borrowers that their materials are overdue.
- Negotiating contracts for library services, materials, and equipment; and
- Performing any other duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Library and Information Sciences; or
- Any first Degree plus a postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Science;
- Two (2) years' experience in a professional library position;
- Thorough knowledge of professional library methods, reference resources and practices;
- Possession of skills in the operation of computer systems; skill in applying library research methods and practices;
